Yiddish is one of the aural wonders of Gotham. A combination of Hebrew,

German, and a rich smattering of other languages, it's a sort of old-world slang,

a tongue with all the excitement and confusion of the new world built in.

Aniticipating our difficulty in learning a new language, well-known mensch

Noam Maitless sent us a copy of Leo Rosten's exhausitve and charming

'The Joys of Yiddish'; and we then schlepped it around town while illustrating

a few of our favorite new words with pictures.
