The Braves had bested the rough-and-ready Mets 4-2 in a hard-fought National
League Championship Series for the right to challenge the Yankees. The Yankees
had beaten the Red Sox, and every team they faced, without so much as oiling
a glove or lacing a sneaker. Outfielders casually flipped through the Times
during opposing at-bats; shortstop Derek Jeter regularly engaged first
baseman Paul O'Niell in lazy games of whist between pitches, just to
pass the time. No. Really. They were that good.
