And then, in the sixth inning, Randy Verlarde made baseball history.
Yankee manager Joe Torre signaled for Jorge Posada (at first) and Tino
Martinez (at second) to run on the 3-2 count to Shane Spencer.
Spencer swung, connecting for a line drive up the middle.
A's second baseman Randy Verlade then did three things:
1) He caught Shane Spencer's line drive: one out.
2) He reached out and tagged Jorge Posada: two outs.
3) He stepped on second base before Martinez could make it back: three outs.
An unassisted triple play -- the rarest feat in the game of baseball. Only
twelve have ever been made, and this was the first in a New York ballpark.
