Once inside, you'll find a large and rambling bar below
the level of the street -- a fine place for grabbing a beer,
often raucous, but not wake-up-a-dog raucous. Many
stories are told about the place. Two of 'em: the steps
from the front door don't simply lead to floor level;
they go up two stairs and then down. 'Tis said that
this would slow the cops as they poured into the
bar during raids. And the pub's very address may
have become part of the language. To be 86'd, of
course, is to be barred from a bar; and Chumley's,
where many a dog-waking patron has presumably
been booted into the street, sits at 86 Bedford Street.
