Just below this building lies Chumley's, the hardest-

to-find pub in New York City. Once upon a time,

making it tough to find the place (at 86 Bedford

Street) was part of the business model: the place was

a speakeasy back in the days of Prohibition. One

can run all the rum one likes nowadays, of course,

but Chumley's still hasn't gotten around to putting

up a sign. Hey, what if Congress repeals the

Volstead Act? Best not to be hasty.
