"Association football at its best is played by the public schools,
the universities, and by various amateur clubs, mostly formed
from school clubs," Mr. Parker notes. "But the matches under
Association rules which attract the largest gatherings of specatators
are those played for the Association Cup by teams of professional
footballers. Professionals attain great skill, and their club matches
are followed and watched by thousands, but the game loses
something of the zest of patriotism, since professionals are paid
for their services, and can be trasnserred from one club to
another by outbidding the fees paid. The game, however, is
immensely popular, and the final of the Cup-ties has
been attended by as many as 140,000 spectators."
