The television, for example -- less a television, in the conventional
sense of the word, than a phosphorescent radio. More dire, to my
way of thinking, was the lack of a bathroom. I had access, by
arrangement, to the bathroom in the two-bedroom apartment
under renovation on the same floor. On the third day, however,
someone locked the apartment. A sporting goods store across
the street from Macy's on Herald Square was offering a two-week
membership to the New York Sports Club with any purchase
of a hundred dollars or more; having read somewhere that gyms
have restrooms and showers, I somewhat solved the locked
apartment problem with the purchase of some shoes and t-shirts.
